The Compasses Inn is a beautiful country pub in Chicksgrove, a quiet, picturesque village in the heart of Wiltshire’s spectacular Nadder Valley. Built in the 14th Century, the pub retains many of its original features; an old flagstone floor, open inglenook fireplace and gorgeous wooden beams. Walking into The Compasses is like stepping back in time.
The main concession we make to modern life is our love of good food, fine local ales and a broad, refined wine list.
Our accommodation – four en-suite bedrooms and a separate, detached three bedroom self-catering cottage – combine all the relaxed charm of country living, with a 21st Century attention to detail. All the rooms have wonderfully comfortable beds, lovely linen, wifi and flat screen TV’s.

- Had lunch with a friend in this lovely unspoilt pub. The food was first class and the service also. Good range of real ales available also. The pub is dog friendly and there are beautiful walks around this quiet village. I noticed a sign in the pub explaining that the pub was changing ownership. I hope the pub remains as good as it has been in terms of quality food but in a relaxed unpretentious environment.
- This is an unpretentious pub/bistro that is highly rated and rightly so. It does very tasty duck breast with garlic potato mash. It's situated in a quiet part of Wiltshire reached through country lanes but worth the trip.
- Outstanding find . Well worth the effort. Part 14 th century inn . Roaring fire. Real history. The sort of inn you wish you had in your village. Wonderful atmosphere, welcoming landlord. Not a bad idea to book as very popular with locals. Excellent fare and choice of real ales / wines.
